Expression of selected marker genes, which are characteristic for individual immune cell types, were evaluated in patient sigmoid colon biopsies. Expression of virtually all candidate immune marker genes increase with inflammation severity indicating an expansion of immune cells—a known feature of intestinal inflammation.
