Transcript abundance for each gene was calculated based on a standard curve generated using in vitro transcribed RNA. For each sample, RyhB abundance was normalized to the level of RpoB RNA, which is relatively constant. Normalization corrects for variation in the total amount of RNA present in the RT reaction mixtures. Note that ratios were generated using arbitrary units, rather than absolute values. Each value presented is derived from an independent experiment.
