Characteristics of spherical cells formed with different seawater concentrations

Strain Mediuma Heat tolerance (°C)b Desiccation tolerancec
HW-1 Liquid DVY or 10% HVY 45 <1 mo
Liquid 20%-100% HVY 80-85 >5 yr
DVY and 10% HVY agar 60-65 >5 yr
20%-100% HVY agar 80-85 >5 yr
SMP-2 Liquid 10% HVY 45 <1 mo
Liquid 20%-100% HVY 55-60 >3 mo
10% HVY agar 45 <1 mo
20%-100% HVY agar 55-60 >3 mo
a

The seawater concentrations tested were 10% to 100% at intervals of 10%.

b

The spherical cells were heat treated at temperatures from 45°C to 90°C at intervals of 5°C.

c

After storage for a period of time, the cells were transferred at intervals onto 50% HVY agar to determine viability. The intervals were 1 month for the first 6 months and then 6 months. SMP-2 has been assayed for desiccation tolerance for only 3 months since we got it.
