^aLDH release was determined in supernatants using NADH as the substrate. It was measured after 6 h of incubation with a multiplicity of infection of 500 for L. casei DN-114 001 and of 100 for E. coli strains. Results are expressed as percent cytotoxycity, calculated as (experimental release − spontaneous LDH release)/(total LDH release − spontaneous release) × 100. E. coli LF32 producing an α-hemolysin was used as a positive control (17). E. coli strain K-12 C600 was used as a negative control.
