Tumors provide a thrombogenic proinflammatory environment that promotes coagulation and endothelial cell activation. The prothrombotic environment stimulates local degranulation of platelets. The release of vascular protective and stabilizing factors from platelets helps tighten endothelial junctions and/or inhibits injurious stimuli produced by tumor cells and tumor-infiltrating leukocytes.
