Recognizes signs of choking, (universal choking sign: holding the neck), unable to speak, gagging, wheezing.
Asks the child: Are you choking? (or in local language), and can you speak?
Calls for help/emergency
Encourages to cough first, if child is conscious.
Gets down on the knees if younger child and performs Heimlich maneuver
Keeps fist below the breast bone, other hand over the fist and gives sharp upward thrust into the abdomen.
Continues till object is ejected or till loss of consciousness
Performs chest compressions if unconscious
