Premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) is a condition defined by loss of ovarian activity before the age of 40 years. POI is characterized by amenorrhea or irregular menstrual cycles with elevated gonadotropins and low estradiol. In this guideline, cessation of ovarian function in women aged from 40 and <45 (age 40–44 years) will be termed early menopause. Early menopause is outside the scope of the current guideline, but the evidence and recommendations may be relevant to women with early menopause.
