V₂ corresponds to the “resting” state (State 2) of mitochondria, where the addition of an exogenous substrate leads to a slow respiration rate. V₃ represents the “active” state (State 3) of mitochondrial respiration, induced by the addition of 50 μM ADP. V₄ denotes the “controlled” state (State 4) of the mitochondria, wherein the complete conversion of ADP to ATP occurs within the polarographic chamber. *p ≤ 0.05 vs control.
