Data are mean ± SD unless otherwise indicated. Cigarette smoking was defined by consumption of > 5 cigarettes a day or > 1 cigarette pack/week consumed in the past 6 months. A family history of gastric cancer was defined as a gastric cancer diagnosis in a first-degree relative (such as a parent, sibling, or child). Alcohol drinking was defined by > 50 g of alcohol/day consumed in the past 6 months. Compliance was defined by > 80% of tablets taken as instructed.
