a

Viability was determined as the percentage of colonies on HU-treated plates compared to those on untreated control plates. All results are averages of determinations from three independent experiments. The data are means ± standard deviations. Statistical differences were determined by one-way ANOVA followed, when significant, by the Newman-Keuls multiple comparison test, using Sigma Stat statistical software (Jandel Scientific). P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant.

b

Significantly different from all other treatments (P < 0.05).
