(B–D) Functional assays which established that GAL4-Smad3 (wt) or GAL4-Smad3 (143–248) mutant are functional in yeast cells. The assays were based on the ability of transformed GAL4-Smad4 (wt) or GAL4-Smad3 (143–248) to activate chromatin incorporated reporters consisting of 5 GAL4 binding sites linked to the β-galactosidase gene (B), the ADE1 gene (C) and the HIS3 gene (D). These assays were performed as described in Materials and Methods.
