Module 1: Introductions and building group cohesion
  • Introduce the intervention format and goals
  • Build motivation for group participation and cohesion among group members
  • Elicit individualized goals for each group member
  • Provide the definition of Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Time Bound (SMART) goals
Module 2: Psychoeducation about trauma
  • Discuss how to monitor feelings
  • Provide psychoeducation regarding the impact of trauma/loss on family functioning and relationships, including how trauma contributes to mood dysregulation and anger
Module 3: Understanding the link between beliefs, bodies, and behaviors
  • Discuss how beliefs, bodies, and behaviors are connected
  • Explore healthy and unhealthy coping strategies
Module 4: Taking control of your life
  • Discuss self-care and self-regulation
  • Introduce skills for self-regulation/mood regulation
Module 5: Relaxation and affect regulation
  • Reflect on how behaviors can alter mood
  • Learn how progressive relaxation and guided imagery can combat tension
  • Identify opportunities for behavioral activation
Module 6: Drawing on our strengths and supports to face life’s difficulties
  • Psychoeducation about grief and loss, and growth in the face of trauma and loss
Module 7: Sequential (step-by-step) problem solving & introduction to relaxation techniques
  • Introduce sequential problem solving via role play
  • Application of problem-solving to participant’s SMART goals
Module 8: Building interpersonal skills
  • Explore how emotions can impact interpersonal interactions
  • Practice positive and assertive interpersonal interactions
  • Introduce the “Stop, Think and Speak” technique
  • Discuss solutions to interpersonal problems
Module 9: Review of Coping Skills & Problem Solving
  • Review helpful and unhelpful coping skills
  • Practice applying problem-solving skills
  • Introduce and practice progressive muscle relaxation
Module 10: Addressing negative self-perceptions
  • Discuss how negative beliefs affect emotions and behaviors
  • Facilitate identification of unhelpful or negative beliefs including hostile attributions and negative self-perceptions
  • Introduce strategies for positive reframing/counteracting negative self-image & stigma
Module 11: Review of skills and relapse prevention
  • Review the sequential problem-solving approach
  • Discuss and devise strategies to cope with potential future challenges
  • Review warning signs and relapse prevention
Module 12: Celebration & moving forward
  • Reflect on skills learned throughout the intervention
  • Reflect on relationships formed
  • Review SMART goals and share successes
  • Allow participants to reflect on group experience
