Brisby, James M., North York, Ont.; University of Toronto, 1953; family medicine; CCFP; former staff, Scarborough General and Centenary hospitals; physician, Bausch and Lomb, Canadian Controller Ltd. and Devro Canada Ltd. Died Apr. 20, 2002, aged 74; survived by his wife, Jackie, and 2 daughters.

Donnell, Margaret M., Etobicoke, Ont.; University of Toronto, 1939; MCFP; former staff, Women's College Hospital and Toronto Board of Education. Died Mar. 16, 2002, aged 90; survived by her companion, Ruth.

Dumont, Guy R., Montréal (Qué.); Université de Montréal, 1956; cardiologie; FRCPC; ancien membre du personnel et chef du département de cardiologie de l'Hôpital Notre-Dame; professeur agrégé, l'Université de Montréal; président élu du Conseil des médecins, dentistes et pharmaciens. Décédé le 23 mars 2002, à l'âge de 72 ans; laisse son épouse, Marie-Cécile Tremblay et deux enfants.

Leblanc, Guy, Trois-Rivières (Qué.); Université Laval, 1963; pédiatrie; ancien chef du département de pédiatrie du Centre hospitalier Ste-Marie. Décédé le 30 janvier 2002, à l'âge de 64 ans.

McDowell, Walter E., Lachine, Que.; McGill University, 1945. Died Mar. 23, 2002, aged 86; survived by his wife, Helen, and 3 children. “He spent 49 years in general practice in Lachine.”

Potyrak, Chester J., Toronto; University of Toronto, 1982; former staff, Evans Occupational Health Clinic. Died Mar. 22, 2002, aged 45; survived by his friend, Jennifer.

Ross, William C., Victoria, BC; University of British Columbia, 1954. Died Mar. 14, 2002, aged 78.

St. Amand, Jacques, Niagara Falls, Ont.; Laval University, 1962; anesthesia; DABA, FACS, FRCPC; former staff, Greater Niagara General Hospital. Died Mar. 25, 2002, aged 67; survived by his wife, Lise, and 2 children.

Schinbein, John E., Prince Rupert, BC; University of Toronto, 1951; general surgery; FACS, FRCSC; former chief of surgery, Sunnybrook Medical Centre; staff, Prince Rupert General Hospital; part-time staff, Workers' Compensation Board. Died because of progressive supranuclear palsy Mar. 24, 2002, aged 78; survived by his wife, Joan, and 3 children. “He dedicated his medical career to the north coast.”

Scougall, Keith H., Arlington, Tex.; Cambridge University (England), 1943; MRCS(Eng.), MCFP; RAMC, WW II. Died Mar. 14, 2002, aged 83; survived by his wife, Betty, and 3 children.

Sharpe, Colin R., Montreal; McGill University, 1975; epidemiology/biostatistics; CCFP; former staff, Sir Mortimer B. Davis – Jewish General, Queen Elizabeth and Lakeshore General hospitals. Died May 19, 2002, aged 53. In a letter to CMAJ, colleagues Eduardo Franco, Jean-Paul Collet and Jack Siemiatycki commented: “He was one of Canada's most brilliant and productive cancer epidemiologists. He made many key contributions concerning the etiology of kidney cancer in children and on the potentially causal role of occupational and environmental factors and use of medications in a variety of neoplastic diseases, particularly breast cancer. The Canadian community of health researchers has lost a significant and increasingly influential voice.”

Smith, Royston R., Mission, BC; University of Toronto, 1943; former chief of staff, Balcarres Union Hospital; associate staff, Fort Qu'Appelle Indian Hospital. Died Mar. 31, 2002, aged 87.

Sovereign, Arthur E., Vernon, BC; University of Alberta, 1953; FRCPC; pediatrics. Died due to a brain tumour Mar. 13, 2002, aged 77; survived by 5 children. Daughter Adriel stated: “He was an old-fashioned doctor who did house calls and all-night vigils at sick kids' bedsides. He practised the medicine of common sense and compassion. The pediatric ward at the Vernon Jubilee Hospital is named after him.”

Tobe, Barry A., Thornhill, Ont.; University of Toronto, 1955; nuclear medicine; FACP, FRCPC; former associate staff, North York Branson Hospital; assistant professor, University of Toronto. Died Mar. 3, 2002, aged 72.

Webb, Stanley, Seeleys Bay, Ont.; Queen's University, 1953; MCFP; former courtesy staff, Kingston General and Hotel Dieu hospitals; medical officer, Joyceville Penitentiary. Died due to Parkinson's disease Mar. 26, 2002, aged 75; survived by his wife, June, and 2 children. “He opened a practice in Seeleys Bay in 1954, and was an active member of the fire department who coached baseball and loved fixing cars.”

Weber, Marvin B., North York, Ont.; University of Toronto, 1963; neurology; FRCPC; former staff neurologist, North York General Hospital; assistant professor, University of Toronto. Died Mar. 13, 2002, aged 62; survived by his wife, Wendy, and 3 daughters.
