Expression of capsid induces juxtanuclear aggregation of mitochondria. Vero cells were mock transfected (A and B) or transfected with expression vectors encoding either capsid (C and D) or E2E1 (E and F). Cells were stained with Mitotracker Red CMXRos prior to fixation and permeabilization. Samples were stained with monoclonal antibodies to capsid (A to D) or E1 (E and F) followed by Alexa Fluor 488-conjugated donkey anti-mouse immunoglobulin G and then examined by confocal microscopy. Images from the Alexa Fluor 488 channel are shown on the left (A, C, and E), and the Mitotracker channel is shown on the right (B, D, and F). Transfected cells are marked with asterisks. Bar, 20 μm.
