(B) shows the colonization of the labeled laboratory strain of E. coli MG1655 in the mouse gut as determined by serial dilution plating on MacConkey agar containing ampicillin. Each symbol represents an individual mouse (n = 4). The lower limit of detection was 100 CFUs per gram fecal material.
