YKL-40 levels in CSF from patients with suspected or confirmed meningitis at admission. Patients with purulent meningitis (n = 48) and patients with encephalitis (n = 5) had significantly higher levels of YKL-40 in CSF than patients with lymphocytic meningitis (n = 49) (Dunn's multiple-comparison test, P < 0.001) and than patients suspected of having but without evidence of having meningitis (n = 32) (P < 0.001).
