Contra refers to rats that received lesions of CeA in one hemisphere and of SNc in the other hemisphere, which prevented communication between those brain regions. Ipsi refers to rats that received lesions of CeA and SNc in the same hemisphere, which left CeA-SNc communication intact in the other hemisphere. CS+ refers to the reinforced visual conditioned stimulus, and CS- refers to the nonreinforced visual CS. The values shown are elevation scores, calculated by subtracting pre-CS baseline responding from responding during the CSs.
