The toxigenic phenotypes were determined in previous studies (11, 16). Except for two ST-I-producing strains and two LT-I- and ST-I-producing strains isolated from children without diarrhea, all other strains were isolated from children with diarrhea. ETEC strains producing only LT-II or ST-II are infrequently found in studies conducted in São Paulo (11).
