The three distinct patterns of population coding that differ along CA1 proximodistal axis. The medial entorhinal cortex is responsible for processing information related to navigation, such as direction and distance to landmarks, position, borders, and speed. In contrast, the lateral entorhinal cortex supplies information pertinent to ongoing experience, including egocentric object vectors, object identity, memory traces, odors and time.
