Here, $Δ R_{2}^{*}$ denotes the location-wise R₂* difference between individual pairs of adjacent WM and GM locations from the corresponding layers, and $\bar{R_{2}^{*}}$ represents their mean. $Δ R_{2}^{*} / \bar{R_{2}^{*}}$ was averaged along the selected GM and WM layers as illustrated in Fig. S1.
