Bachynski, Vladimir F., Winnipeg; University of Manitoba, 1935; FICS, FAGS, MCFP; former associate staff, St. Boniface and Misericordia general hospitals. Died May 17, 2002, aged 92; survived by 2 sons. “He was a founding member of the College of Family Practice of Canada and a president of the General Practitioners Association of Manitoba.”

Davies, Gordon R., Kamloops, BC; McGill University, 1953; general surgery; FACS, FRCSC; former medical director, Royal Inland Hospital. Died Apr. 17, 2002, aged 73.

Deegan, Francis K., North York, Ont.; University of Ottawa, 1955; general surgery; DABS, FACS, FICS, FRCSC; former chief of surgery, Brockville General Hospital; consulting staff, St. Vincent de Paul and Kemptville and District hospitals. Died June 3, 2002, aged 73.

Fratkin, Leonard B., Vancouver; University of Alberta, 1942; general surgery; FACS, FRCSC; RCAMC, WW II; former attending surgeon, Vancouver General and Shaughnessy hospitals; senior surgical consultant, Vancouver General Hospital; clinical associate professor, University of British Columbia; president, College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC; senior member, CMA. Died June 1, 2002, aged 84; survived by his wife, Priscilla, and 4 children.

Gardner, H. Allen, Toronto; University of Toronto, 1961; general pathology; FCCMG, FRCPC; former director, genetic services, Oshawa General Hospital; consultant, Toronto Hospital – General Division and Women's College Hospital; associate professor, University of Toronto. Died May 14, 2002, aged 65; survived by his wife, Zita, and 3 children.

Gates, Richard T., Dresden, Ont.; University of Toronto, 1939; MCFP. Died May 4, 2002, aged 87.

Jones, Norman S., Scarborough, Ont.; Queen's University, 1952; former attending staff, Scarborough and Toronto East general hospitals. Died May 29, 2002, aged 83; survived by 2 children. “He was a respected physician in the Scarborough Bluffs community for almost 40 years.”

Macdonald, J.D. Claude, North York, Ont.; University of Toronto, 1951; general surgery; FRCSC; former clinical director, Palliative Care Unit, Toronto Grace Hospital; surgical staff, Scarborough General Hospital. Died May 9, 2002, aged 77; survived by his wife, Joan, and 10 children.

McFarlane, Ronald H., Winnipeg; University of Manitoba, 1941; internal medicine; FACP, FRCPC; RCN, WW II; former assistant physician, Health Sciences Centre; associate staff, Misericordia General Hospital; associate professor, University of Manitoba. Died May 25, 2002, aged 84; survived by his wife, Marjorie, and 4 children.

Piper, Gary A., Guelph, Ont.; University of Toronto, 1960; family medicine; CCFP, FCFP; former staff and chief of staff, Guelph General Hospital; staff, St. Joseph's Hospital; chair, College of Family Physicians of Canada. Died May 30, 2002, aged 68; survived by his wife, Anne, and 5 children. Reverend John Buttars told the Guelph Mercury: “Once I went to visit someone. I knew Gary had been there — they had a happy face drawn on their toe.”

Read, John H., Calgary; McGill University, 1950; pediatrics; DPH, FRCPC; former staff, Foothills Provincial General and Alberta Children's hospitals; professor and head, Division of Community Health Science and professor, pediatrics, University of Calgary; founding member, University of Calgary medical school . Died of Alzheimer's disease May 31, 2002, aged 78. “He established the smoke-free policy at the Foothills Hospital in 1983. His son, Ken, was the World Cup downhill ski champion 5 times.”

Smith, Ian M., North Battleford, Sask.; University of Edinburgh (Scotland), 1955; MCFP; former chief of medical staff, Lady Minto Union Hospital; staff, Battlefords Union Hospital and Battleford Regional Care Centre; assistant clinical professor, University of Saskatchewan; senior member, CMA. Died May 31, 2002, aged 72.

Weil, Robert J., Halifax; University of Prague (Czechoslovakia), 1933; psychiatry; FAPA, FACP, FRCPC; former president, Canadian Psychiatric Association and Inter-American Council of Psychiatric Associations; professor, Dalhousie University. Died May 6, 2002, aged 92; survived by his wife, Stella. The Globe and Mail reported: “Cash was scarce in post-Depression Saskatchewan, and he was often paid in kind, with firewood, potatoes or a side of beef. He established what was probably Canada's first community medical clinic. For $1 a month every family in the community was covered from birthing to tooth extraction.”

Wong, Ken C., Vancouver; University of British Columbia, 1964; anesthesia; FRCPC. Died May 18, 2002, aged 64; survived by his wife, Alice.
