A Multidisciplinary Clinical Approach in Decision-Making in Complex Dento-Alveolar Trauma in the Maxillofacial Region: An Original Research

ABSTRACT

Background:

Dento-alveolar trauma impacts function and aesthetics, requiring a multidisciplinary approach involving oral surgeons, orthodontists, and prosthodontists. The lack of standardized protocols for complex cases results in fragmented care.

Materials and Methods:

A cross-sectional study was conducted with 500 dental professionals using a structured questionnaire to assess treatment preferences, interdisciplinary collaboration, and management practices. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 25.

Results:

Among participants, 60% prioritized surgical stabilization, 50% emphasized orthodontic alignment, and 40% focused on prosthodontic rehabilitation. A total of 70% recognized the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration. Multidisciplinary management improved functional and aesthetic outcomes.

Conclusion:

Collaboration among oral surgeons, orthodontists, and prosthodontists is crucial for optimal management of dentoalveolar trauma, enhancing patient outcomes.

INTRODUCTION

Dento-alveolar trauma affects function and esthetics, requiring a multidisciplinary approach for stabilization, alignment, and restoration. Prompt intervention and collaborative care are key to optimal recovery and long-term outcomes.[1] Despite advancements in dental sciences, the lack of standardized protocols for complex dentoalveolar trauma, especially in interdisciplinary cases, results in fragmented care and delayed treatment. Effective coordination among oral surgeons, orthodontists, and prosthodontists is essential for optimal decision-making and management.[2] This study aims to analyze the management of complex dentoalveolar trauma by assessing the contributions of oral surgeons, orthodontists, and prosthodontists in addressing functional, structural, and esthetic concerns.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

This cross-sectional study utilized a structured questionnaire to collect data from 500 dental professionals, including oral surgeons, orthodontists, prosthodontists, and general dentists, ensuring comprehensive representation. The questionnaire covered initial assessment techniques, preferred treatment plans, follow-up care strategies, and interdisciplinary collaboration practices to evaluate how specialists coordinate for optimal trauma management. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS version 25, employing descriptive and inferential statistics to identify key trends, with results presented through tables and graphs for clarity in assessing decision-making and collaborative approaches.

RESULTS

The study provided key insights into demographics, treatment preferences, interdisciplinary collaboration, and patient outcomes in managing complex dentoalveolar trauma. Among 500 participants, 40% were oral surgeons, 30% orthodontists, 20% prosthodontists, and 10% general dentists, ensuring balanced expertise. Treatment preferences varied, with 60% prioritizing surgical stabilization, 50% emphasizing orthodontic alignment, and 40% highlighting prosthodontic rehabilitation for long-term outcomes. Interdisciplinary collaboration was crucial, as 70% of participants recognized the importance of teamwork in achieving comprehensive care. Multidisciplinary management significantly improved functional and esthetic outcomes, reinforcing the necessity of an integrated approach for optimal patient care [Table 1 and Figure 1].

DISCUSSION

Dento-alveolar trauma affects both function and esthetics, often resulting from high-impact incidents like accidents or sports injuries.[3] Management involves soft tissue repair, bone stabilization, tooth repositioning, and occlusal restoration, requiring a multidisciplinary approach.[4] Oral surgeons handle initial trauma care, orthodontists ensure proper alignment and occlusion, and prosthodontists restore function and esthetics with prosthetic rehabilitation, highlighting the necessity of collaborative care.[5] Existing literature highlights the importance of an interdisciplinary approach to managing complex dentoalveolar trauma. For example, studies have reported better patient outcomes when oral surgeons and orthodontists collaborate on cases requiring simultaneous surgical stabilization and alignment of teeth.[6] Similarly, the integration of prosthodontics in the later stages of treatment has been shown to enhance both functional and esthetic results.[7]

CONCLUSION

This study highlights the significance of a multidisciplinary approach in managing complex dentoalveolar trauma cases in the maxillofacial region. The collective expertise of oral surgeons, orthodontists, and prosthodontists leads to superior patient outcomes, emphasizing the need for interdisciplinary collaboration in clinical practice.
