trHbN affords protection for M. bovis BCG (ATCC 35734) respiration from NO. Respiration of washed cell suspensions was measured with an oxygen electrode apparatus. A solution of NO was added at the times indicated by the arrows to give a final concentration of 1 (AC) and 2 (D) μM NO. The O2 concentration at the times of injection is shown alongside each addition. The experiments were repeated at least three times with similar results. The duration of inhibition was determined as the period between the addition of NO and the point obtained by extrapolation of the residual respiration rate (after inhibition was relieved) and the inhibited rate.
