Horse heart Mb⋅O₂ serves as a control. Aqueous NO (to a final concentration of 25 μM) was added to a solution of either trHbN⋅O₂ or Mb⋅O₂ (25 μM heme content). Spectra were recorded after equilibrium was reached to ensure that the reaction was completed. Final concentrations of nitrite and nitrate were determined as described in Material and Methods.
