Earlier administration of antibiotics improves survival in mice with IL-6 levels >14,000 pg/ml. All mice (n=18) with IL-6 levels above this threshold die if antibiotics are initiated 12 hours after CLP. In contrast, 25% of mice (4/16) with markedly elevated IL-6 levels survive if antibiotics are begun 6 hours after the onset of sepsis. The solid horizontal line in each column represents mean IL-6 levels, which were drawn prior to instituting antibiotics in all groups.
