The glycerol production rate was calculated by plotting the change in extracellular glycerol concentration against time and the change in dry weight biomass against time. Both of these plots were fitted to a five-parameter sigmoidal function (correlation coefficients [r2] were above 0.989 for both curves), from which the glycerol production rate was derived. The three glycerol production rates calculated by the model were based on sets of parameters for each growth phase as defined in Tables 1 and 2.
