Frequency distribution of divergent numts from a Chinese rhesus macaque (A) and the human genome (B). The numts correspond to a small segment of the mitochondrial 12S rDNA gene used to analyze old OPV samples (see below). For the macaque library, the major form (37/139 clones) corresponds to a known macaque mtDNA haplotype. For those gleaned from the human genome, a human haplotype (GenBank accession no. X89832) was taken as reference.
