Best practice advice: VTE prophylaxis
  • Risk assessment for VTE in early pregnancy is recommended for all pregnant women with cancer

  • In any woman with metastatic disease, LMWH prophylaxis is recommended throughout the pregnancy and for at least 6 weeks postpartum

  • Women with a diagnosis of active cancer should start LMWH prophylaxis from 28 weeks or from the first trimester if there are other risk factors, such as hospitalization, chemotherapy, nausea and vomiting in pregnancy, generally feeling unwell, immobility, or surgery

  • Women with previous treated cancer do not need LMWH prophylaxis unless recurrence is diagnosed during pregnancy
