Figure 1.
Experimental design. (A) In experiment 1, all rats underwent a 2-d behavioral procedure. Trace fear conditioning was conducted in context A on day 1 and tested in context B on day 2. Animals received either VEH or MUS into the RE immediately before both the conditioning and the test sessions, and either SAL or APV into the DH immediately before conditioning session. (B) In experiment 2, the 2-d behavioral procedure, the same as described in experiment 1, was done, with either SAL or APV infused into the VH immediately before conditioning session. On day 3, animals from the NoCOND groups underwent the EPM/marble burying test and shock sensitivity test. For control experiments, the drug history of the animals during conditioning, as well as the order of EPM and marble burying test were counterbalanced, with shock sensitivity test always done the last. APV, DL-2-amino-5-phosphonovaleric acid; DH, dorsal hippocampus; EPM, elevated plus maze; MUS, muscimol; RE, nucleus reuniens; SAL, saline; VEH, vehicle; VH, ventral hippocampus.
