Jerk stimulation paradigm. Rats were placed in the supine position on the shaker platform (A). A head bolt affixed to the skull was attached to the shaker arm in the orientation as shown. Jerk stimuli were applied in the naso-occipital plane (double headed arrow). The jerk stimulation paradigm (B) included a 10-minute quiescent interval between each block. Each block consisted of five trials with 400 bidirectional jerks delivered in each trial, 2,000 jerks per block, for a total of 6,000 jerks. Each jerk was approximately 18 milliseconds, for a total of 36 seconds per block. The bolded number of jerks below the trial numbers in each block represents the number of bidirectional jerks delivered within each block.
