Figure 3.

The specific neuroanatomic areas from which c-Fos immunolabeled nuclei were counted in subdivisions of the mid rostro-caudal vestibular nuclear complex (VNC). Enlargement of black box on the low magnification image (A) depicts unique grid square configurations used to identify LVe (B) of the mid rostro-caudal VNC. Enlargements of the black box in the low magnification image (C) depict unique grid square configurations used to identify mid rostro-caudal subdivisions: MVeMC (D), MVePC, and SpVe (E). Rectangles in B, D, and E represent superimposed reticules on photomicrographs; grid squares (65 × 65 μm) bounded in red represent regions from which c-Fos counts were taken. For each reticule, letters A - E specify rows and 1 – 6 define the columns (represented in E’). Abbreviations: 4V, fourth ventricle; 8vn: vestibulocochlear nerve; DCN: dorsal cochlear nucleus; D: dorsal; ICP: inferior cerebellar peduncle; LVe: lateral vestibular nucleus; M: medial; MVeMC: medial vestibular nucleus - magnocellular; MVePC: medial vestibular nucleus - parvocellular; Pr: prepositus nucleus; Rt: reticule (grid overlay defining subdivision configurations); SCP: superior cerebellar peduncle; sp5: spinal tract of the trigeminal nerve; SpVe: spinal vestibular nucleus; VeCb: vestibulocerebellum.
