Table 2.

Comparison of the history of laser photocoagulation and the presence of retinal degeneration in eyes with and without ERM.

Eyes with ERM Eyes without ERM
Number of eyes 871 1091
Previous laser treatment for retinal degeneration 114 (13.1%) 53 (4.9%)
No history of laser treatment 757 (86.9%) 1038 (95.1)
χ2 42.132
P value <0.001
Untreated retinal degeneration was found at presentation 116 (15.3%) 6 (0.6%)
No retinal degeneration was found at presentation 641 (84.7%) 1032 (99.4%)
χ2 100.188
P value <0.001

Data were analysed using chi-square tests, and a P-value < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. “Eyes without ERM” were randomly selected from patients who visited during the same period as those with ERM and were scheduled for cataract surgery, all of whom underwent OCT examination to confirm the absence of ERM.
