CT images of the stem as well as sun and shadow branches of a 14-year-old spruce tree. Dark areas represent low Hounsfield Units (HU), whereas bright ones represent high HU values (width 938, center −79). All images show heartwood formation in the center, which has an irregular shape in the stem (arrow). The latewood of the annual rings appears bright, indicating a higher density.
