Figure 7.

(A) Permeability, Pi, (B) partition coefficient, Ki, and (C) mobility, ui, of each counterion under single-counterion and mixed-counterion conditions. C2, C3, C4, and C5 stand for the number of carbons in acetate, propionate, butyrate, and valerate, respectively. The permeabilities for each counterion under mixed-counterion conditions were determined from the measured initial concentration-normalized fluxes, the measured initial current during ED, and the membrane resistance measured in a 0.05 M/0.05 M mixed VFA/Cl− solution. All bars are the average values from at least duplicate experiments, and error bars represent the standard deviation.
