Optical density (OD₆₀₀) and pH were measured after a 48-h incubation in SM containing 10 g liter⁻¹ glucose, FOS, or inulin as the sole carbon source. The results are mean values from three separate experiments (standard deviations were always less than 0.27 for OD₆₀₀ and 0.15 for pH).
