Ten orchards were sampled each year; a total of 100 figs per orchard were collected in 1997, and 200 per orchard in 1998 and 1999. The limit of detection of ochratoxin A was 1 ng/g. For A. alliaceus and A. ochraceus, all visibly infected figs from each orchard were pooled; for Penicillium, figs from all orchards were pooled for each year.

b

Some fig samples with A. alliaceus also had colonies of the A. ochraceus group; we counted these mixed samples only as A. alliaceus.
