Length distributions of secondary structure elements in mRNA. This figure shows the length distributions of secondary structure elements in 3′-UTRs (open circles), 5′-UTRs (closed circles) and coding regions of the mRNA alignments (open squares), for the original alignments (in black) and for the randomized alignments (in green). The length of a secondary structure element is defined as the number of base pairs (bp) it bridges in the mRNA alignment. Note that the length of secondary structure elements is limited by 400 bp owing to the fixed window size used to analyse each mRNA alignment.
