The year is swiftly drawing to a close, as we publish the final issue for 2025 of the Journal of Periodontal & Implant Science (JPIS), the official journal of the Korean Academy of Periodontology. We would like to express our heartfelt appreciation for all the contributions that shaped every article in each issue over the past year, a sense of gratitude that feels even deeper as we reflect on how far JPIS has come. JPIS was first launched as the Journal of the Korean Academy of Periodontology in 1971. Initially published annually, the journal became biannual in 1988, triannual in 1993, quarterly in 1996, and has been published bimonthly, on the last day of February, April, June, August, October, and December, since 2010.

The highlight of the year for JPIS came last summer with the publication of the Journal Citation Reports for 2024. JPIS is ranked 27th among 162 journals in the category of Dentistry, Oral Surgery & Medicine, placing it in the first quartile (Q1) with a Journal Impact Factor (JIF) of 3.2. In addition, it is worth emphasizing that our self-citation rate remains low, and that the majority of citations originate from other journals. While no single metric can fully capture a journal’s quality, this performance reflects its broad and independent influence, as well as sustained attention and engagement from the global academic community. We were honored to be recognized for this achievement, which was made possible by the researchers who submitted high-quality work to our journal, the peer reviewers who provided thoughtful and constructive evaluations, and the readers who engage with our articles and build upon them in their own research; together, they continually strengthen this synergistic cycle of scholarly exchange. We regard this milestone not as an endpoint, but as an encouragement to continue advancing the scientific value and global reach of JPIS while maintaining rigorous editorial standards.

At the same time, maintaining a high-quality open-access journal requires substantial resources. JPIS has been supported by a grant from the Korean Federation of Science and Technology Societies, funded by the Korean government, as well as by the Korean Periodontal Research Foundation. Owing to this support, we currently operate as an open-access journal without article processing charges (APCs). Although management costs are rising and sustaining this model may become increasingly challenging, we remain committed to minimizing the financial burden on our authors for as long as possible. As many journals managed by large commercial publishers rely on high APCs to offer rapid processing and sophisticated submission systems, it has become increasingly difficult for society-based journals to compete with such infrastructure. Unlike large publishing houses, we do not employ full-time editors or managing staff; instead, our editorial team and board members contribute their time and expertise on a voluntary basis.

We plan to use this opportunity to further promote JPIS and to cultivate a dedicated community of authors and reviewers. We also aim to engage a broader group of internationally recognized experts in the fields of periodontology and implant science, and we kindly ask for their support and participation when we reach out, even amidst their busy schedules. In closing, we would like to once again celebrate the improved JIF of JPIS as reflected in the latest Journal Citation Reports, and to express our sincere gratitude to all those who have supported the journal.
