Diagrammatic representation of reciprocal functions of signal cascades through the activation of gp130. The STAT-mediated signal induces the SOCS-1 protein, which is a suppressor of JAKs; and SOCS-1 inhibits both STAT and SHP-2/Ras/Erk mitogen-activated protein kinase activation. On the other hand, the SHP-2-mediated signal inhibits STAT3 activation. JAK = Janus kinase; SHP-2 = tyrosine phosphatase-2; SOCS = suppressor of cytokine signaling; STAT = signal transducer and activator of transcription.
