Cyber attacks and the Dark Web were a featured article in the 2025 September/October Missouri Medicine issue (122)(5):359–365).
In October 2025, SimonMed Imaging was attacked by the Medusa ransomware group in one of the largest healthcare data breaches ever. Potentially harmful data was stolen for as many as 1.2 million patients. More than 200 GB of sensitive medical and financial data was exfiltrated.
The company quickly identified security vulnerabilities belatedly changed passwords, implemented two-factor authentication and enhanced endpoint security. This is a classic example of too little and too late. Your practice, your hospital, and you, personally, are at risk.
Review the Missouri Medicine article and expeditiously initiate the highest level of cyber-protection possible. As a country and as a profession we must make stopping these cyber-bandits a national imperative. It is an existential treat to Medicine, indeed all commerce.
