Reactions catalyzed by bacterial PI-PLC. (A) Cleavage of two fluorogenic substrates derived from fluorescein, butyl-FLIP, and methyl-FLIP. In this intramolecular phosphotransferase reaction, the nonfluorescent substrate is cleaved to produce I(1,2)cP and a highly fluorescent product. (B) In a second reaction catalyzed by PI-PLC, I(1,2)cP is slowly hydrolyzed, opening the ring to form I(1)P.
