The total potential E(h) (“fusion potential,” solid line) consists of the topological barrier Et (“bare fusion potential,” dotted line) and dlvo interactions Ed(h) (dashed line). Fusion typically occurs at a separation hf, while disks may fuse over a distance ξ. An expansion of E around h = hf defines a “penetration length” ℓ and a “radius of curvature” ξ.
