Inactivation of fba inhibits FH binding. Bacterial cells were harvested from exponential-phase cultures and adsorbed to wells of microtiter plates. The immobilized cells were incubated with FH followed by goat anti-human FH serum and an alkaline phosphatase-labeled secondary antibody. FH binding is expressed relative to that of the wild-type strain 90-226. Data are from three independent experiments, wherein each assay was performed in triplicate.
