Schematic drawing of a longitudinal section of a connexin hemichannel. The N-terminus forms the cytoplasmic entrance of the pore by virtue of a turn in the vicinity of the 12th amino acid residue. The positions of M1, N2, and T8 residues are indicated as a function of the electrical distance along the channel pore. It has been proposed that the inward translocation of charges in the N-terminus initiates channel closure by Vj-gating (see text).
