(B) Initial polymerization of RecA on a DNA molecule unwound by 400 turns (Inline graphic), in the presence of ATP (arbitrary time origin). The external force applied is ∼6 pN for both molecules. Fluctuations are observed to be considerably larger in the ATP case, which hints at a very rich dynamics via ATP hydrolysis.
