Schematic representation of the interaction causing depolarization by a change in direction of the emission transition moment from the initial “in-plane” (of the isoalloxazine ring) direction (μem) to an “out-of-plane” direction corresponding to the emission transition moment of the charge-transfer excited state (μct). The angle between the absorption and emission dipole moments in the CT complex is roughly estimated between ∼36 and 48°. The example is taken from the structure of E. coli GR.
