RINm5F cells were treated for 24 h with IL-1 (10 units/ml) (B and C), NMMA (2 mM) (C), or camptothecin (25 μM) (D), and cellular morphology was examined by phase-contrast microscopy. Treatment with IL-1 resulted in cell swelling and detachment (B), events that are prevented by NMMA (C). In contrast to the effects of IL-1, induction of apoptosis using camptothecin (D) resulted in cell shrinkage and condensation of the nucleus. Untreated control cells are shown in (A). Results are representative of three independent experiments.
