Diagnosed based on the following laboratory signs: thrombocytopenia (<100,000/mm3), prolonged prothrombin time (>15 s) and activated partial thromboplastin time (>40 s), and presence of fibrin degradation products (>10 μg/ml) and/or d-dimer (>0.5 μg/ml).
