The conversion rates were calculated based on consumption of furfural or HMF during the feeding of hydrolysate. The in vitro furfural- and HMF-reducing activities were measured as described previously (23).
The in vitro activities were recalculated as g furfural or HMF converted g biomass−1 h−1. This was done to enable a comparison between the conversion rates in the fermentations and the in vitro measurements.
