Effects of glutamine and alanyl-glutamine on Clostridium difficile toxin A-induced secretion in ligated rabbit ileal loops. Rabbit ileal loops were treated simultaneously with toxin A (10 μg/loop) and solutions containing Gln or AlaGln (30 or 100 mM) for 5 h, and then the loop length and the volume of secretion were measured. The bars represent means plus standard errors of the mean of the volume of secretion per centimeter of loop length. The asterisks indicate statistically significant differences (P < 0.05) in the volume of secretion/intestinal-loop length between the groups treated with toxin A plus glutamine or alanyl-glutamine and the group treated with toxin A plus PBS. Statistical significance was determined by analysis of variance and Bonferroni's test. The numbers above each column represent n for each group.
